Addressing the high cost of infant formula

The UC Santa Cruz International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) team has a legacy of taking on community-focused projects, and this year was no exception. The student team spent a year working to address the high cost of infant formula, an issue that affects families around the world—and touched members of the group personally.

The 2,400-acre oak-studded grassland property in San Benito County, which has served as a cattle ranch for most of the last 100 years, becomes the 42nd reserve within the University of California’s Natural Reserve System (NRS) and the seventh UC Santa Cruz reserve.

UC Santa Cruz announces a new 2,400-acre UC Reserve

The gift of oak-studded grassland property in San Benito County, along with a stewardship endowment to UC Santa Cruz, will establish the Strathearn Ranch Reserve as part of the UC Natural Reserve System. The new reserve will provide valuable educational and research opportunities and conserve the land in perpetuity.

Students from UC Santa Cruz's first classes—many of whom had learned about it from an article in Life magazine—often say they were attracted to its redwood-studded landscape, mind-expanding vistas, and the sense that it was a place where dreams could become reality.
