  • Chancellor Christensen resigns

    Chancellor Mark Christensen resigns after disagreements with faculty surface over administration and organization of the campus. University Provost Angus E. Taylor is named acting chancellor.

  • Ground broken for the Long Marine Laboratory

    A trio of UCSC chancellors — Angus Taylor, Dean McHenry, and Mark Christensen — break ground for the Joseph M. Long Marine Laboratory at Younger Lagoon on September 15, 1976.

  • Men’s fencing team wins national recognition

    The UCSC men’s fencing team, coached by Charles Selberg, wins national recognition in 1976 by placing second in the Western Intercollegiate Fencing Championships.

  • Minority Biomedical Research Support Program founded

    UCSC’s Minority Biomedical Research Support Program is launched in 1975 as one of the first such projects in the United States.

  • Predatory Bird Research Group established

    The Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group forms at UC Santa Cruz at a time when only two nesting pairs of peregrine falcons remain in California. Thanks to the group’s efforts, the falcon is removed from the endangered species list in 1999.

    Founding chancellor Dean E. McHenry retires; UC Berkeley professor of geology and geophysics Mark N. Christensen is named UCSC’s second chancellor.

    Social psychologist Elliot Aronson wins the American Psychological Association’s award for distinguished writing. Later he becomes the only psychologist to have won the association’s highest awards in all three major academic categories when he is honored for distinguished teaching (1980) and distinguished research (1999).

  • Institute of Marine Science established

    The Institute of Marine Sciences, an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of UC, is established to enhance marine science research and education.
