    Oakes College and College Eight established

    Oakes College and College Eight are established. A college endowment and support for the eventual construction of Oakes is provided by the San Francisco Foundation, using funds from the Roscoe and Margaret Oakes Foundation. Professor of sociology J. Herman Blake is appointed provost for Oakes; and professor of environmental planning Paul Niebanck, for College Eight.

  • Kresge College opens

    Kresge College opens

    Kresge College, under provost and professor of biology Robert Edgar, accepts first students and sets up operation in the Family Student Housing complex. Kresge Foundation funds construction of the new college. Since opening in 1971, Kresge College has received numerous accolades for its design from architectural critics throughout the world.

    Where he’s calling from

    Celebrated American short story writer Raymond Carver teaches poetry and writing classes as a visiting lecturer. Carver taught at UCSC for three years.

    New academic plan for 1970-80 revises enrollment goal downward, from 27,500 to between 10,000 and 15,000.

    College Five opens with professor of literature James B. Hall as provost. (In 1981, the college is renamed Benjamin F. Porter College in recognition of a gift of additional construction funding from the Porter-Sesnon family.)
